Net Work: a proposal

Net Work as a proposal was first developed for SPARKS and Canterbury Borough Council in conjunction with SWAPP arts consultants. Net Work was one of three proposals shortlisted for Herne Bay's 2005 temporary public artwork.

Net Work draws on the inherent qualities of a lake or seaside position to create a simple but compelling art work.

A fishing net structure is used as the basis to produce a floating grid approximately 100 meters by 100 meters square. Football-sized fishing floats are attached to the net in an 10 x 10 formation at one meter intervals forming a floating array of 100 floats. Each float houses a circle of Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). These bright lights can produce any colour in the spectrum to form star-like dots bobbing on thewater. The net will be anchored to the sea floor and will move with the waves.
