The Periodic Table Collection: unmade proposal

|
I aim to work with each element from The Periodic Table, to make a series of ‘actions’ to extract and isolate these elements, where possible, from sources local to a residency, and to produce an installation with the resulting materials. The Residency will, in part, be used to undertake (and document via video and photography) a series of actions and activities necessary to extract these elements. This is an opportunity for me to begin a major new series of works. I am used to undertaking research into the qualities of materials previously unknown to me, in order to realise projects. For example. three years ago, I wanted to fill 1.5 metre high glass tank with liquid, submerge a delicate 3D structure made from fishing line, and on that structure grow a crystal tree (see Staining Space and Timeslice). I had no idea how to do this. My memories of making crystals as part of my school science lessons were no real help to me. I set to work with an array of jam jars, buckets and aquaria to try and grow crystals using a variety of different domestic chemicals like salt, sugar, and washing soda. I got a few crystals, a lot of dirty looking liquid, and it all took a long time. I needed help and called scientist, Mark Miodownik. Mark suggested I try potash aluminium sulphate (evidently used to keep gherkins crispy) and warned me it might behave differently when I mixed nearly 500 litres of it, rather than a jam jar full. |
