Staining Space

Staining Space draws on my long-term interest in using computer programming to ‘grow’ organic forms, such as trees, from digital code. Through a recent residency at the Mechanical Engineering Department at Bath University, I have been experimenting with rapid prototyping to produce ‘digital trees’ as physical objects and at different scales. A small Rapid Protoyped tree becomes the source of a live projection as its image is captured by a surveillance camera. In the installation, the large still image for the digital cell simulation is offset against the detailed animation on the monitors and the projected tree against the tree form in the tank, and they jostle for our awareness.
